Landfill gas electrical power plant Rautenweg - Wien :

To be able to utilise the approx. 35 million Nm³ of gas produced through the decomposition of waste in the Rautenweg landfill near Vienna, a plant of the Jenbacher AG for the conversion of landfill gas into electrical energy was built.

The plant produces yearly about 63 million kWh of electricity, which covers the annual requirement of some 25,000 households.

On account of the Raoutenweg plant one no longer needs to convert 1,500 - 2,500 Nm³/h of natural gas into electricity in a power plant.

Only a few months after the deposition of waste in dumps microorganisms begin to decompose organic materials. The result is landfill gas, which is composed of methane and car-bon dixide. In the process of time one ton of waste material produces about 180 m³ of landfill gas. This displaces the oxygen in the ground and leads to annoyance due to the bad smell.

To prevent the death of plantlife in the vicinity of the dump, the gas is collected by means of network of tubing and pumped to a gas treatment facility. The energy in the gas is used to power gas engines coupled with generators and is hence converted into electricity.

The generated electrical energy is fed via transformers into the public network. The burned gas drives the turbo-superchargers and is finally led, purified, through the smokestack to the outer air.

What is technically special about the plant is that the modules are equipped with SCR catalyc converters in which environmentally friendly uric acid is used as a reduction agent instead of the ammoniac solution. This considerably reduces the NOx emission.

Electricity is won from about 4,000 Nm³/h landfill gas that never reaches the atmosphere. This means that hourly 2,400 Nm³ less methane are pumped into the atmosphere. In this same hour aome 1.500 - 2.500 Nm³ of natural gas do not have to be converted into electricity in a power station.

The electricity produced by the plant is fed into the network of Viennese electrical power stations.
